What is GAIP?

The Global Academic Internship Programme (GAIP) is a hands-on, short-term academic internship conducted by Corporate Gurukul, Singapore in association with and certified by the Strategic Technology Management Institute (STMI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Education.

 

It enables engineering undergraduates from universities and institutes of higher learning in Asia to level up by pursuing their passion and interest through internships and project-based learning in Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Big Data, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and IoT.

Dr. TAN Wee Kek

Senior Lecturer

Dr. TAN Wee Kek is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Systems & Analytics at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore. He is also a Fellow of the prestigious NUS Teaching Academy. He graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Information Systems in July 2013 and a Bachelor of Computing in Information Systems (1st Class Honours) in July 2007, both from the National University of Singapore. Prior to this, he attended Singapore Polytechnic and graduated with a Diploma in Computer Information Systems with Merit in July 2001.

 

His current primary research interests focus on consumer-based information technology (e.g., online decision aids, social computing, virtual worlds and consumer cloud services). Most of his research is based on design science, a well-established problem-solving paradigm that has been widely adopted in information systems research. His current secondary research interests focus on information systems education.

 

His work has been published or is forthcoming in journals such as Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), Decision Support Systems (DSS), Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS), and Journal of Information Systems Education (JISE). Dr. LEK Hsiang Hui is a Lecturer at the Department of Information Systems and Analytics at National University of Singapore (NUS). He graduated with Bachelor of Computing (Honours) in Computer Engineering and PhD in Information Systems from National University of Singapore.

 

He currently teaches undergraduate courses in Enterprise Systems Design and Development courses. He also conducts executive training in Healthcare Analytics at the Centre of Health Informatics (CHI).

 

He has won the University level Annual Teaching Excellence Award for AY 2015/16, AY 2016/17, AY 2017/18, and placed on ATEA honor roll for AY2018/19. In addition, he has also won the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (FTEA) for AY2014/15, AY2015/16, AY2016/17, and placed on FTEA honor roll for AY2017/18.

 

He currently serves as one of the department's curriculum committee members which look into the curriculum planning. He is also one of the faculty advisors for the NUS BiZiT Society, a student-initiated society that aims to promote visibility for the business IT industry.

Mr. Shantanu Pandey is a technology consultant who has worked on apps, AI engines and portals for clients like TaxiForSure, OneIndia, VahRehVah, CultureMachine, TableConnection, Canara Bank, HotWatch and more, with mix and match of tech. He has trained at NUS, Singapore for last 3 years on AI, Machine Learning and IoT.

His passion for programming started at the age of 6 with C++ in the hope of developing games, and the awe of science has pushed him since then. After his stint with Microsoft, he got excited about the start-up ecosystem and eventually started his own company. The academic internship schedule, date and time are subject to change based on the availability of professor(s) from NUS and professionals from HPE Education. Prior notice will be given to all concerned parties on the change of date and best efforts will be made by Corporate Gurukul to accommodate convenience of all parties on revised schedule, date and time.

What is the application process?

You are required to apply online using the Enroll Now button. The detailed application process post that will be shared on email.

What are the selection criteria?

The selection criteria are as follows:

  1. Aggregate CGPA of all semesters till date
  2. Pre-requisite Test Scores
  3. Projects/Courses taken up in the relevant module chosen

What are the subjects for pre-requisite test assessment?

Based on the module that you have applied for, you will be assessed on the following:

What is the last date to pay for the registration fees?

The payment deadlines will be mentioned in your ‘Offer Letter’. You are eligible for the ‘Offer Letter’ only if you are selected post pre-requisite test.

What happens if I do not pay my fees by specified due date? Can it be extended?

Your application is automatically cancelled due to non parent of fees by the specified deadline. Any extensions requests are at the sole discretion of the admissions department and availability of seats. You will be required to send am email requesting extension and the reason for delay in payment.

Is accommodation mandatory?

Yes, accommodation is mandatory for all participants.

What are the requirements to earn all the programme completion documents?

Issuance of all certificates and the LoE will be at Corporate Gurukul’s discretion subject to:
a. the participant’s performance
b. completion of assignments and
c. 90% attendance during the academic internship

Where are the hands-on sessions conducted?

  1. The hands-on sessions are conducted in the Lecture Theatre/Seminar Rooms. You will not visit any laboratories for the same unless requested by the professor(s).
  2. Laptop with the specifications mentioned in OFFER LETTER is MANDATORY for all participants.

 

What are the hardware/software requirements for the academic internship?

  1. Microsoft Excel
  2. VMware workstation or latest Vmplayer installed (Win) or VMware fusion with License (Mac)

How many students typically score grade A+ and above?

In the past batches, about 10% of students have secured grade O or A+.

How many batches are there during the programme?

The programme curriculum is designed for beginners. However, there are participants who have completed advanced projects and have advanced programming skills. There may be an advanced batch introduced for such candidates.

Is the Professor(s) different for both batches?

Yes, the faculty profiles are different for both batches. The same will be shared post your batch is confirmed.

Do we visit HPE office for the HPE Education part of the curriculum?

No. The entire academic internship is delivered at NUS, Singapore.

Are we divided into groups for projects and assignments?

Yes, you will be assigned teams for project work and assignments. These teams typically consist of 4-5 members.

Can we choose our team members?

No, the team members are assigned by Corporate Gurukul team in consultation with the professor(s). They are created keeping in mind that the pre requisite readiness and a proper mix of students from various institutions. Any request for choice of team member will not be entertained.

How do we submit the projects/assignments?

All assignments and projects will be submitted on the Learning Management System, Acadly.

Are assignments given daily? By when do we submit them?

  1. Assignments will be given daily and need to be submitted as per specified deadline.
  2. You may be required to work on the assignments in teams or individually as per the nature of assignment.

How many projects do we do during the programme?

You are required to complete one project during the duration of the programme. This will be done in teams.

When does the project presentation happen?

The project presentations will be conducted post HPE and NUS sessions.

What are the assessment components?

Participants will be assessed based on the following components:

  • Continuous assessment (MCQ Quizzes) - 30% weightage
  • Test (MCQ) - 20% weightage
  • Project Assessment - 50% weightage

Are both HPE and NUS sessions graded?

Yes, both HPE and NUS sessions will be graded. They are graded individually.

When are the MCQ sessions conducted?

MCQ Quiz will be conducted every day during the afternoon session.

What if I get delayed in submissions?

Any late submissions of project, assignments or quizzes beyond specified deadline will carry negative marks.

Can I meet with professor(s) on my own?

Participants may independently, on their own initiative meet Professor(s) with prior appointment. Corporate Gurukul’s participation or GAIP should nowhere be mentioned for such interactions are outside the scope of GAIP.

Where do we stay in Singapore?

You will stay in a hostel in Singapore. The exact hostel address and facilities will be informed to you during academic internship orientation.
In case university hostels are not available, you will be staying in hostels outside campus. In such case, coach services will be provided for transfer from hostel to university and back.

 

When should I reach airport?

Reach the airport at least three hours prior to the departure.

When should I arrive in Singapore?

The exact dates and timing will be issued to you formally upon successful admission for GAIP. Kindly hold your ticket booking till that time.

When should I depart from Singapore?

The exact dates and timing will be issued to you formally upon successful admission for GAIP. Kindly hold your ticket booking till that time.

Where should I go when once I arrive in Singapore? Will CG provide a pick up facility from airport?

Airport Transfers are not covered as a part of programme deliverables. However, Corporate Gurukul may arrange for coach services for pick up from Airport and drop at hostel if there are a lot of students travelling during the same time slot.


Please note that there is no drop facility from hostel to airport during the return journey.

How should I proceed for Visa?

  1. Please approach Authorized Visa Agents (AVA) only for Visa processing. You may check the list of AVAs for Singapore here.
  2. The Visa processing fee is S$ 30 (INR 1500). The agent will charge you additional fee of INR 300-500.
  3. You need to apply for TOURIST VISA only.
  4. You will be granted 30 days of stay from the day you enter Singapore.

How much time does it take during the immigration?

The immigration process takes typically 2-3 minutes per individual.

What are the documents that I need to carry for Immigration process?

You will be required to show your passport, boarding pass and E-Visa to the immigration officer. They might ask for additional supporting documents as below. Please carry the following documents along with one set of photocopy (mandatory):

The hostel booking will be done by Corporate Gurukul as per the following schedule:

Early check-in (same day) may be available at a fee if there is a vacancy.

Hostel Check-out

Time: Before 12:00 PM
Late check-out is not available.

Can I book hostel for extra day before/after the programme by paying for it?

No, the hostels are booked only for the programme duration. Should you wish to extend your stay, you will need to arrange for accommodation on your own.

What are the facilities in hostel?

They will be confirmed one month prior to the programme commencement. Typical facilities include:

There is wide range of choice amongst Indian, Chinese, European, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian cuisines. Typically, 3 meals in a day should cost you between S$18 - S$25. However, the estimate may vary as per your dining choices.

Where is GAIP conducted?

GAIP will be conducted at National University of Singapore (NUS).

Is it an academic internship or a training programme?

It is an academic internship, which is a hands-on guided experience in an academic environment to hone industry-relevant skills and knowledge in a chosen domain with mentorship and training by university professor(s) and industry professional(s).

Are the dates confirmed for the academic internship?

The academic internship schedule, date and time are subject to change based on the availability of professor(s) from NUS and professionals from HPE Education. Prior notice will be given to all concerned parties on the change of date and best efforts will be made by Corporate Gurukul to accommodate convenience of all parties on revised schedule, date and time.

Applying for GAIP

What is the deadline to submit the application form?

The application deadline is 9th October, 2020.

What is the application process?

You are required to apply online using the Enroll Now button. The detailed application process post that will be shared on email.

What are the selection criteria?

The selection criteria are as follows:

  1. Aggregate CGPA of all semesters till date
  2. Pre-requisite Test Scores
  3. Projects/Courses taken up in the relevant module chosen

What are the subjects for pre-requisite test assessment?

Based on the module that you have applied for, you will be assessed on the following:

Payment

What is the last date to pay for the registration fees?

The payment deadlines will be mentioned in your ‘Offer Letter’. You are eligible for the ‘Offer Letter’ only if you are selected post pre-requisite test.

What happens if I do not pay my fees by specified due date? Can it be extended?

Your application is automatically cancelled due to non parent of fees by the specified deadline. Any extensions requests are at the sole discretion of the admissions department and availability of seats. You will be required to send am email requesting extension and the reason for delay in payment.

Is accommodation mandatory?

Yes, accommodation is mandatory for all participants.

a. the participant’s performance
b. completion of assignments and
c. 90% attendance during the academic internship

Academics

Where are the hands-on sessions conducted?

  1. The hands-on sessions are conducted in the Lecture Theatre/Seminar Rooms. You will not visit any laboratories for the same unless requested by the professor(s).
  2. Laptop with the specifications mentioned in OFFER LETTER is MANDATORY for all participants.

 

What are the hardware/software requirements for the academic internship?

  1. Microsoft Excel
  2. VMware workstation or latest Vmplayer installed (Win) or VMware fusion with License (Mac)

How many students typically score grade A+ and above?

In the past batches, about 10% of students have secured grade O or A+.

How many batches are there during the programme?

The programme curriculum is designed for beginners. However, there are participants who have completed advanced projects and have advanced programming skills. There may be an advanced batch introduced for such candidates.

Is the Professor(s) different for both batches?

Yes, the faculty profiles are different for both batches. The same will be shared post your batch is confirmed.

Do we visit HPE office for the HPE Education part of the curriculum?

No. The entire academic internship is delivered at NUS, Singapore.

Are we divided into groups for projects and assignments?

Yes, you will be assigned teams for project work and assignments. These teams typically consist of 4-5 members.

Can we choose our team members?

No, the team members are assigned by Corporate Gurukul team in consultation with the professor(s). They are created keeping in mind that the pre requisite readiness and a proper mix of students from various institutions. Any request for choice of team member will not be entertained.

How do we submit the projects/assignments?

All assignments and projects will be submitted on the Learning Management System, Acadly.

Are assignments given daily? By when do we submit them?

  1. Assignments will be given daily and need to be submitted as per specified deadline.
  2. You may be required to work on the assignments in teams or individually as per the nature of assignment.

How many projects do we do during the programme?

You are required to complete one project during the duration of the programme. This will be done in teams.

When does the project presentation happen?

The project presentations will be conducted post HPE and NUS sessions.

What are the assessment components?

Participants will be assessed based on the following components:

  • Continuous assessment (MCQ Quizzes) - 30% weightage
  • Test (MCQ) - 20% weightage
  • Project Assessment - 50% weightage

Are both HPE and NUS sessions graded?

Yes, both HPE and NUS sessions will be graded. They are graded individually.

When are the MCQ sessions conducted?

MCQ Quiz will be conducted every day during the afternoon session.

What if I get delayed in submissions?

Any late submissions of project, assignments or quizzes beyond specified deadline will carry negative marks.

Can I meet with professor(s) on my own?

Participants may independently, on their own initiative meet Professor(s) with prior appointment. Corporate Gurukul’s participation or GAIP should nowhere be mentioned for such interactions are outside the scope of GAIP.

Travel and Accomodation

Where do we stay in Singapore?

You will stay in a hostel in Singapore. The exact hostel address and facilities will be informed to you during academic internship orientation.
In case university hostels are not available, you will be staying in hostels outside campus. In such case, coach services will be provided for transfer from hostel to university and back.

 

When should I reach airport?

Reach the airport at least three hours prior to the departure.

When should I arrive in Singapore?

The exact dates and timing will be issued to you formally upon successful admission for GAIP. Kindly hold your ticket booking till that time.

When should I depart from Singapore?

The exact dates and timing will be issued to you formally upon successful admission for GAIP. Kindly hold your ticket booking till that time.

Where should I go when once I arrive in Singapore? Will CG provide a pick up facility from airport?

Airport Transfers are not covered as a part of programme deliverables. However, Corporate Gurukul may arrange for coach services for pick up from Airport and drop at hostel if there are a lot of students travelling during the same time slot.


Please note that there is no drop facility from hostel to airport during the return journey.

How should I proceed for Visa?

  1. Please approach Authorized Visa Agents (AVA) only for Visa processing. You may check the list of AVAs for Singapore here.
  2. The Visa processing fee is S$ 30 (INR 1500). The agent will charge you additional fee of INR 300-500.
  3. You need to apply for TOURIST VISA only.
  4. You will be granted 30 days of stay from the day you enter Singapore.

How much time does it take during the immigration?

The immigration process takes typically 2-3 minutes per individual.
