NUS Institute for Engineering Leadership
The Institute for Engineering Leadership was established in the NUS Faculty of Engineering in 2012. It advocates the nurturing of engineer-leaders through innovation & entrepreneurship experiences and learning by doing. Programmes and modules are crafted to provide opportunities for engineering students to complement their technical skills with value-creation and value-capture skills, and to develop soft skills. IEL’s experiential learning experiences immerse students in an intensive environment where they must form and function as highly effective teams in a very short timeframe to succeed. Properly guided, these experiences provide opportunities for self-reflection in working towards personal mastery and development of interpersonal skills; both essential to undertake any leadership role.

Enterprise Development Graduate Module Youth Programme Lead
Vinod has over 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur and an intrapreneur having started his career at Emerson Process Management in R&D. Subsequently, he became a Product Manager for it’s new market leading control systems and led it’s rollout for Asia Pacific. In late 1999, he joined Accellion soon after it was founded. There he built and worked with a diverse team of engineers to deliver market leading secure distributed file transfer used in over 2,000 enterprises globally today. Wanting to chart his own tech path, Vinod co-founded Qryptal (www.qryptal.com) in 2011. Qryptal develops platforms for document security and integrity. It is currently used in over 15 countries across large enterprises, SMEs and government.
Leveraging on his extensive experience in leading tech innovation & entrepreneurial ventures, Vinod has developed and led unique experiential modules in NUS’ Institute for Engineering Leadership (IEL) in the Faculty of Engineering since its inception in 2012. He leads the Enterprise Development module where graduate student teams find new market opportunities for stakeholder enterprises. He challenges the students not only to hone their innovation and entrepreneurial skills but also to step up as leaders. Vinod also contributes to other programmes such as IEL’s TechLaunch module where graduate student teams to get Technology to Market. He ran IEL’s InnoVenture module for undergraduates which equips students with skills to create value by addressing a tech problem set by stakeholder enterprises.

Originally from the Netherlands, Randall has been calling Singapore home for the past 9 years. Personally, Randall is active in a variety of sports ranging from weekly football matches, gym and cycling. In his spare time, he reads, cooks and even started building Lego again! Whenever the opportunity arises, he loves to travel and explore new cultures and creative impulses.
Professionally, Randall started as a strategy and management consultant at Capgemini Consulting in the Netherlands covering a wide range of projects from culture changes to IT implementations and business cases. Upon pursuing his MBA at NUS, Randall focused on innovation leadership development and technology commercialization with subsequent roles as Programme Lead and Lecturer at IEL, and most recently as a Director Innovation at Lumen Lab – MetLife Innovation Centre.
Randall has broad Asia experience having delivered projects and workshops in a wide variety of Asian countries. Randall is a co-founder of Structo and actively mentors startups.
Randall holds a BSc. in International Business Administration and MSc. in Strategic Management from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam. He holds an MBA from the National University of Singapore.
Currently, Randall runs his own strategy and innovation consulting company Persistensie Pte Ltd advising startups, government institutions and MNCs.

Following a stint in Shell, Prof Hang entered the NUS Faculty of Engineering as an academic and was subsequently appointed as Vice-Dean, Head of Electrical Engg, and NUS’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (research).
In parallel, he became the founding Deputy Chairman of the National Science and Technology Board (NSTB) from 1991-2000. During 2001 to 2003, Prof Hang was seconded to NSTB (renamed A*STAR) as its Executive Deputy Chairman. He pioneered the establishment of the Grow Enterprise with Technology Upgrade Programme to transfer know-how and manpower from A*STAR research institutions to small-and-medium enterprises. His own area of expertise is in digital control systems. In addition to serving on the Boards of several local enterprises, he has recently co-founded EMF Innovation in Singapore and India to develop and commercialize disruptive, frugal digital motors for transportation and other industrial applications.
During 2001 to 2003, Prof Hang was seconded to NSTB as its Executive Deputy Chairman to consolidate all the non-bio research institutes under the Science and Engineering Research Council, renaming NSTB as the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR) in the process. He also pioneered the establishment of the Grow Enterprise with Technology Upgrade Programme (GET-UP) to transfer know-how and manpower from A*STAR research institutions to local small-and-medium enterprises.
Now back at NUS as the Executive Director of the Institute for Engineering Leadership, after first heading the NUS’s division of engineering and technology management from 2007- 2016, Prof Hang continues to challenge himself, and others, to stretch their boundaries with an eye not on chasing wealth but to work towards creating value for others.

Corporate Gurukul is organizing the online certified internship programme in association with our partner National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore.
How/Where is the internship conducted?
The internship will be conducted via LIVE online sessions, using web conferencing and collaboration software, such as Zoom/ GoToMeeting and Slack.
Is it an online internship or a training programme?
It is an online internship, with training components, which is a hands-on guided experience to hone industry-relevant skills and knowledge in a chosen domain with mentorship by university faculty and industry professional(s).
What are the highlights of the internship?
Some of the highlights of the internship:
- LIVE Interactive Online sessions: Training on theory and core concepts
- In-session: Assignments and real-life case examples
- Quiz: Continuous assessments to ensure understanding and progress
- Project Work: Participants work in groups on a real-world project

Do I need to have start up experience/own a company to attend this programme?
No. If you are interested in pursuing an entrepreneurial venture and exploring your BIG IDEA that is enough. Currently running, previously ran, or showing interest in launching a start-up company is a plus.
Is the programme open to students from any school?
Yes, students studying the ICSE, CBSE, IB MYP, IB DP, IGCSE curriculum can apply for the programme. Students can be of any nationality, ethnicity and belong to any country!
What are the selection criteria?
The selection criteria are as follows:
- Overall academic performance (grades) in current year and previous year ins school
- Profile & Interest – The profile of the students is important. Your knowledge exhibited during the application profile process as well as counselling call is important.
What is the last date to pay for the ‘Internship Fee’?
The payment deadlines will be mentioned in your ‘Offer Letter’. You are eligible for the ‘Offer Letter’ only if you are selected.
What happens if I do not pay my fees by the specified due date as mentioned in ‘Offer Letter’? Can it be extended?
Your application is automatically cancelled due to non-payment of fees by the specified deadline as mentioned in ‘Offer Letter’.
Any extension requests are at the sole discretion of the admissions department and availability of seats. You will be required to send an email requesting extension and the reason for the delay in payment.
What are the ‘Internship Fee’ inclusions?
- Certificate of Completion by National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore.

When will I get the completion documents?
The certificates and LORs will be awarded at the end of the internship.

Where are the live sessions conducted?
The LIVE online sessions are conducted live on Zoom/ GoToMeeting conferencing.
What are the hardware/software requirements for the online internship?
Zoom/ GoToMeeting installed on your laptop/desktop.
What about the faculty? Are they equipped enough to conduct online sessions?
Conducting online sessions is not something new for the subject matter experts at NUS Singapore. Our instructors have been trained to handle LIVE online sessions for quite some time now and skilled enough to provide a great learning experience.
How do we submit the projects/assignments?
All assignments and projects will be submitted on the Learning Management System, which will be introduced during the ‘Orientation Session’.
Are assignments given after every session? By when do we submit them?
- Assignments will be given weekly and need to be submitted as per the specified deadline by the facilitator.
- You may be required to work on the assignments in teams or individually as per the nature of the assignment.
How many projects do we do during the internship?
You are required to complete one project during the duration of the internship. This will be done in groups/teams.
When does the project presentation happen?
The project presentations will be conducted via LIVE video tools like Zoom/GoToMeeting at the end of the internship, The practise sessions are conducted with your Project Mentor on a weekly basis.
What are the assessment components?

When are the MCQ sessions conducted?
MCQ Quiz will be conducted every week after the LIVE session is completed.
What if I get delayed in submissions?
Any late submissions of project, assignments or quizzes beyond the specified deadline will carry negative marks.

Is the programme open to students from any school?
Yes, students studying the ICSE, CBSE, IB MYP, IB DP, IGCSE curriculum can apply for the programme. Students can be of any nationality, ethnicity and belong to any country!

What are the selection criteria?
The selection criteria are as follows:
- Overall academic performance (grades) in current year and previous year ins school
- Profile & Interest – The profile of the students is important. Your knowledge exhibited during the application profile process as well as counselling call is important.
Payment
What is the last date to pay for the ‘Internship Fee’?
The payment deadlines will be mentioned in your ‘Offer Letter’. You are eligible for the ‘Offer Letter’ only if you are selected.
What happens if I do not pay my fees by the specified due date as mentioned in ‘Offer Letter’? Can it be extended?
Your application is automatically cancelled due to non-payment of fees by the specified deadline as mentioned in ‘Offer Letter’.
Any extension requests are at the sole discretion of the admissions department and availability of seats. You will be required to send an email requesting extension and the reason for the delay in payment.
What are the ‘Internship Fee’ inclusions?
- Certificate of Completion by National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore.
- ‘Letter of Recommendation (LOR)’ by National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore for top 2 teams.
When will I get the completion documents?
The certificates and LORs will be awarded at the end of the internship.

Where are the live sessions conducted?
The LIVE online sessions are conducted live on Zoom/ GoToMeeting conferencing.
What are the hardware/software requirements for the online internship?
Zoom/ GoToMeeting installed on your laptop/desktop.
What about the faculty? Are they equipped enough to conduct online sessions?
Conducting online sessions is not something new for the subject matter experts at NUS Singapore. Our instructors have been trained to handle LIVE online sessions for quite some time now and skilled enough to provide a great learning experience.
How do we submit the projects/assignments?
All assignments and projects will be submitted on the Learning Management System, which will be introduced during the ‘Orientation Session’.
Are assignments given after every session? By when do we submit them?
- Assignments will be given weekly and need to be submitted as per the specified deadline by the facilitator.
- You may be required to work on the assignments in teams or individually as per the nature of the assignment.
How many projects do we do during the internship?
You are required to complete one project during the duration of the internship. This will be done in groups/teams.
When does the project presentation happen?
The project presentations will be conducted via LIVE video tools like Zoom/GoToMeeting at the end of the internship, The practise sessions are conducted with your Project Mentor on a weekly basis.
What are the assessment components?

When are the MCQ sessions conducted?
MCQ Quiz will be conducted every week after the LIVE session is completed.
What if I get delayed in submissions?
Any late submissions of project, assignments or quizzes beyond the specified deadline will carry negative marks.
